Info about the Shiva Temple:
Noted as the oldest temple in Goa, Tambdi Surla is a Shaivite temple of Lord Shiva built in the 12th century. This temple is a treat to eyes because of its unique style of construction. It is the only monument of Kadamba-Yadava architecture. Kadamba dynasty was ruling during the time when this temple was constructed. If you notice every bit of the temple’s architecture, you would realize how much pain has been taken by the craftsmen who worked to make this masterpiece.

Tambdi Surla is located inside the area of Bhagwan Mahavir National Park. Situated amidst nature, it is a divine place. The intricate carvings of the temple adorn the interior and sides of the temple. It is built by skilled craftsmen. Now, there is a priest cum caretaker who stays there throughout the day. Along with Lord Shiva, the temple has fascinating figures of Lord Vishnu and Brahma. Every corner of the temple tells a story. Tambdi Surla faces east so that the rays of the rising sun first falls on the deity.
Apart from nature and the temple, you would only find some monkeys hopping from here and there. The place is unbelievably quiet. You can only hear the sound of the stream and the chirping of birds when you are in the temple premises. There is a headless Nandi right at the center of the temple. River Surla flows by the temple. The location is so pristine that you will definitely love to visit the temple not once but several times. Mahashivaratri is celebrated with pomp and show in the temple where the visitors as well as the locals of the area participate with all their heart and soul.

Tambdi Surla temple is around 65 kms from the capital city of Panjim. The drive around the city is wonderful. While reaching tambdi surla temple, you might witness peacocks and if you are lucky you might see a peacock dancing on the tunes of rain. It is just 22kms from Valpoi.

Nearby the temple, there is a village, so you won’t get proper accommodation. You can stay in some city of Goa and visit the temple. Or you can also book rooms in the resorts located in the Bhagwan Mahaveer National park. To admire the temple, a travel is worth it. Temple remains open for public 365 days a year and mostly visited during monsoon to get the best out of nature. Some of the nearby most visited places are Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, Famous Dudhsagar Waterfall, Mollem national park etc.
The temple is not generally very crowded, so you will love the sound of the rippling stream that flows with gust. The location is so divine that your first step in the temple premises takes you back in the time when it was built.
